Introduction

Horse Behavior & Communication

Horses are herd animals and flight-based thinkers. Read their body language and use small, consistent cues to build trust.

Reading the Horse

  • Ears: forward = focus; swivel = searching; pinned back = warning.

  • Eyes & Nostrils: wide eyes, flared nostrils = tension—lower the difficulty.

  • Tail & Body: loose tail and soft muscles = relaxed; bracing or backing = needs space.

Communication Rules

  • Be predictable—same words, same hand and leg positions.

  • Start light; increase only until understood, then soften.

  • Reward instantly—release, voice praise, or rest.

  • Manage the environment—introduce new places on the lead first.
